Talking Gems
Talking Gems is a therapeutic resource based on the underpinning ideas of Talking Stones (Crosby, 1993) but developed to allow for use within a variety of settings and using a wider range of materials (which included with the set). Talking Stones is a technique designed to support self-advocacy and can contribute to developing an understanding of a client's sense of self, self-esteem, sense of agency, and sense of belonging (Wearmouth, 2007).
This technique allows individuals to assign personal meaning to otherwise meaningless objects. It helps clients express their feelings about a range of topics in ways that may not have been previously possible, as comparing human experiences to images, objects, or situations helps convey complex ideas clearly.
The set includes a range of gems and stones, carefully selected to allow for a depth and breath of representation and exploration of a clients world, views and feelings. The in depth booklet explores vital points to consider before starting to ensure clients are safely and carefully supported through each session. The booklet them explores the use of the stones in a range of settings, with young people and adults. There are lists of questions to support effective exploration, underpinned by personal construct psychology, positive psychology and solution focused practice. The set comes in a practical and inviting cloth bag for each of transporting and safe keeping.
This resource will be beneficial for a wide range of practitioners, including counsellors, psychologists, therapists, pastoral workers, emotional literacy support assistants (ELSA) and many more.
